Healthy Hair The following preparations can be used to address some of the most common follicle complaints: Do away with dandruff Dandruff is caused by increased cell renewal in the scalp - usually as a result of poor diet, sluggish metabolism, hormone imbalance, or radical dietary change. Excess fat and sugar also cause changes in cell renewal or follicle secretions. Foods such as broccoli, eggs, nuts, liver, fish and bran, are recommended to prevent dandruff. The wrap 5 drops rosmary oil 2 tbsp olive oil Mix. Massage into scalp. Cover with plastic wrap. Leave overnight. Wash and rinse in the morning. The scalp conditioner 2 tbsp fennel 2 tbsp nettles 2 cups boiling water * For long hair, double up Steep herbs in water for 20 minutes. Strain. Pour onto hair and work into scalp. Leave for 15 minutes. Rinse.
Dreaded dryness Dry hair is often the result of underactive sebaceous glands, excessive heat-styling and poor circulation. Suggested foods to combat dryness include eggs, milk, avocados, olives, pawpaw and pumpkin. Egg shampoo 2 eggs 2 tbsp water 1 tbsp apple cyder vinegar Blend ingredients together. Massage into scalp. Rinse with tepid water. (This is important as hot water will cause eggs to set.) Nature`s hot oil treatment 5 ml almond oil 5 ml wheatgerm oil Mix. Massage into scalp and hair ends. Cover with plastic wrap and a towel. Leave for 10 minutes. Rinse with lemon or vinegarwater. (Tablespoon of either, added to tap water.)
Dullness vs shine Boost shine and combat dullness by preparing the following: Silky shine 1 tbsp vinegar 1 cup tepid water Dilute. Pour over hair. Comb and rinse. Dull defence Saturate dry hair with equal measures of olive and almond oil. Blow-dry for 5 minutes. Leave for a further 20 minutes. Comb through. Shampoo and condition as per usual. Note: Dull hair should be rinsed with cold water, as hot water causes cuticles to swell and will create an uneven surface - giving an even duller appearance. Cold water also closes cuticles and ensures an all-over shine.
Damaged hair control To treat over-processed or sun-damaged hair: Damage control 3 tbsp oil (olive or canola) plastic wrap hot towel (soaked in hot water and wrung out) Massage oil into hair for 5 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap and towel. Leave for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as per usual.
For Your Eyes Only It is believed that the eyes are the mirrors of the soul. Allow yours to sparkle by using: Eye mask 2 tsp cucumber juice 1 tsp milk powder Mixed together, they create a soothing mask for eylids. Leave for 10 minutes. Potato: Raw potato slices placed over the eyes relieve dark circles, bags and puffy eyelids. Cucumber: Cucumber slices soothe and refresh sore or tired eyes. Note: Extra care needs to be taken when applying treatments to delicate eye areas. Eye preparations are most effective if they are refrigerated before use. Effective exfoliators Exfoliating dead skin cells improves the skin`s general appearance. Try the following: Oatmeal exposure 1 tbsp ground oatmeal 1 tbsp yoghurt, plain apple, grated 2 tsp lemon juice Mix oatmeal and yoghurt to paste. Add apple and lemon juice. Stir well. Massage over dry, clean skin. Leave for 15 - 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Oily skin These masks are perfect for oily skin: `Egg`cellence 1 egg white whipped Apply to the face. Wait for it to dry and tighten. Rinse. Flour power 1 tsp soya flour 1 tsp honey 1 pinch salt 6 drops lemon juice 5 drops tea-tree oil Mix and apply to face. Leave for 10 minutes. Rinse. Dry skin Treat dry and flaky skin with the following: Bee beautiful (cleanser) 11/2 tbsp honey, warmed up Smooth it over face. Dip fingers in warm water. Work them over face in circular motion. Rinse and pat dry.
General Skin Treats Facial mask (to tighten skin) 2 tbsp honey 1 egg white Beat egg and allow to stand. Apply honey to face. Massage for 4 minutes. Leave for a further 6 minutes. Rinse, Apply egg white to face. Leave for 10 minutes. Rinse. Facial & body moisturizer 1/2 cup dried chamomile 2 tbsp honey 1/2 cup milk or cream 4 tsp wheatgerm Soak chamomile in milk for 31/2 hours. Strain. Add honey and wheatgern. Stir, Apply Soothing milk bath 2 cups milk 1 cup boiling water 1/2 cup dried chamomile Soak chamomile in water for 30 minutes. Strain liquid. Mix liquid with milk. Add to bath water. Facial massage 1 tsp almond oil 4 drops rose water 3 drops tea-tree oil Mix together. Massage into face. Remove with a damp face cloth.
Lip service Treat chapped lips by mixing and applying: 2 drops jojoba oil 1 drop lavender oil 2 tsp aloe vera gel
Knees, heels and elbows Treat these rougher areas by applying olive oil, or another vegetable oil, such as avocado, coconut or sesame, on a regular basis.
Soft hands Healing hands 11/2 bowl warm milk 2 tbsp almond oil Mix. Bathe hands in mixture for 15 minutes. Dry hands with paper towels.
Sole searching Prepare these foot remedies to soothe tired or aching feet: Foot favour 1 tsp vinegar, white 1/2 cup yoghurt, plain 1 tbsp cucumber, mashed Rub over feet. Leave for 5 minutes. Rinse. Mustard foot bath When mixed in warm water, mustard forms an essential oil that stimulates blood circulation and releases heat. Mix a few teaspoons of mustard powder in tepid water and soak feet for 10 minutes. Note: Home brews don`t contain any preservatives. It`s imperative that they are not stored. If your skin has allergic tendencies, it is always good to try a test patch on your neck before applying treatments to other parts of the skin. The above ingredients can be obtained at selected health stores, pharmacies and supermarkets.
