Maid of Honour speech

Q: My best friend has asked me to be maid of honour at her wedding. Being a New Age woman, I cannot see the point of having the best man make a speech at the reception and not the maid of honour as well. We have all known each other for years and I would like to say a few words. Am I allowed to, and if so how do I ask my friend if I can make a speech?

A: It is true that, traditionally, the best man makes the speech. but you are right - this is the new millennium. Make your suggestion to the bridal couple before the time and see what they say. (Of course, remember stress levels at this point.) Obey may love the idea but if the answer is no, accept it perhaps you can say a more personal `mini` speech to the couple in private on the day.
